Is it permissible to wear sports clothing of European teams not with the intention of imitation?

It is permissible to wear modest sportswear that covers the 'awrah, even if it belongs to non-Muslim teams, so long as the Muslim does not intend to imitate disbelievers or show loyalty to them. What is prohibited is clothing that bears the symbol of a specific religion, such as the attire of monks and priests, based on the Prophet's (peace be upon him) saying: "Whoever imitates a people is one of them." It is better for a Muslim to distinguish himself from disbelievers in all matters, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) commanded differing from the polytheists, Majus, and Jews. The basic ruling concerning clothing is permissibility, unless it is intended for imitation or does not cover the 'awrah.
