What are the limits of dealing with a mother-in-law who constantly causes distress, and how can one avoid God's wrath while feeling aversion towards her?

The fundamental principle in interactions among Muslims is affection, mercy, and tolerance, as attested by the Almighty's saying: {And speak to people good words}, and His saying: {Strong against disbelievers, merciful among themselves}. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, encouraged love and mercy among believers. These meanings are emphasized further if there is kinship, such as lineage and neighborhood. As for a woman's mother-in-law, her son's wife is not obligated to maintain ties with her more than with other Muslims. However, it is preferable to treat her kindly, be gentle with her, and endure her harm, out of consideration for the husband and to preserve affection.
