Is what is happening to the Islamic Ummah now a punishment from God or a trial, and is there a verse in the Qur'an that indicates relief for the Ummah?

All that happens to people is by the decree of Allah. The adversity that befalls them may be a warning, or a punishment and trial for their sins, so that they may return to Allah and repent. Indeed, Allah afflicted past nations with suffering and hardship so that they would humble themselves before Him. The calamities that befall people are due to what their hands have earned, and no corruption has appeared on land or sea except for what people's hands have earned. If people were to repent and turn back to Allah, Allah would change their condition and grant them honor and victory. The greatest danger is that people do not take heed and turn back to Allah when adversity strikes. Whoever does not turn back has failed the test. If they do not return after the adversity, they may be tried with ease as a gradual enticement, and then Allah will seize them suddenly.
