What is the ruling on a man repeating the phrase "she is divorced" five times while in a state of extreme anger?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Divorce pronounced during extreme anger does not take effect if the husband is unaware of what he is saying. However, if he is aware of what he is saying and divorces [his wife] three times or more, or if he intends by the three [pronouncements] to emphasize [a single divorce], then she becomes unlawful for him until she marries another husband. But if he intended a single divorce and the rest as emphasis, then a single divorce takes effect, and he may take his wife back before her 'iddah expires, if it was the first or second divorce.
