Do the people in the graves sleep as we do?

The grave is the first stage of the Hereafter, and the buried person is either tormented or honored. The life of Barzakh (interim period between death and resurrection) is part of the unseen, known only to Allah, and it is not like the life of this world. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: «Indeed, the grave is the first stage of the Hereafter. If one is saved from it, what comes after it will be easier. But if one is not saved from it, what comes after it will be more severe.» When the deceased is buried, two angels come to him and ask him about the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). If he answers with faith, his grave will be expanded for him and illuminated, and it will be said to him: «Sleep like the sleep of a newlywed whom none awakens but the most beloved of his family to him.» But if he was a hypocrite, the earth would close in on him, his ribs would be compressed, and he would be tormented. The comparison of the sleep in the grave to the sleep of a newlywed is due to the pleasantness of life, and does not refer to the conventional sleep known in this world.
