Do the souls of the living and the dead meet in dreams, and does what a sleeping person sees regarding the state of the deceased, whether in bliss or requesting charity, reflect their true conditions, and is this spiritual encounter possible because sleep is the minor death?

The meeting of the souls of the living and the dead in the Barzakh is a matter of disagreement among scholars. Some scholars have cited the verse: "Allah takes the souls at the time of their death, and those that do not die [He takes] during their sleep. Then He keeps those for which He has ordained death and releases the others for a specified term. Indeed in that are signs for a people who give thought" (Quran 39:42), as evidence that souls meet in dreams. Ibn al-Qayyim supported this view, stating that reality attests to it with examples where the living see the dead in their dreams, and the deceased inform them of unseen matters that come true. As for meeting outside of dreams, there is no legitimate religious evidence to support it. What a sleeper sees concerning the state of the deceased, if it is a true vision, then what he sees is reality. This has occurred with many of the early Muslims (Salaf), and they conveyed the conditions of the dead.
