Is it permissible to wear the white and black kufiyya (shemagh) in Jordan—which some associate with Palestinian origins—with the intention of remembering the homeland and the Palestinian cause, while justifying that this intention carries no racist tendencies?

There is no harm in wearing the shemagh, as it is among the permissible things. What was mentioned about blameworthy fanaticism should be confronted with wisdom and by informing Muslims that they are one nation, and that fanaticism among them on a tribal or ethnic basis is religiously condemned and is a form of pre-Islamic jahiliyyah tribalism. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, Allah, the Exalted and Most High, has removed from you the arrogance of Jahiliyyah and its boasting in ancestors. [There is only] a pious believer and a wretched transgressor. All people are children of Adam, and Adam was created from dust. Let people cease boasting about their men, or they will be more insignificant to Allah than the beetles that push filth with their noses." And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, when some of the Ansar and Muhajireen called out with such a call: "Leave it, for it is repulsive."
