What is the ruling on a man praying the obligatory prayers in his home without an excuse, and what is the ruling on eating, drinking, and sitting with him?

A man who prays at home without a valid excuse misses out on a great reward. Rather, he is sinful if he prays alone, because congregational prayer is obligatory according to the most preponderant opinions. Allah Almighty commanded congregational prayer even in times of fear (war), and His saying: ﴿And when you are among them and lead them in prayer, let a group of them stand with you﴾ [An-Nisa: 102] indicates this. Furthermore, the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, intended to burn the houses of those who lagged behind from the congregation, and he did not permit a blind man to abandon it. Whoever fails to attend congregational prayer without a valid excuse has abandoned the guidance of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. Ibn Mas'ud used to believe that no one would stay away from it except a hypocrite whose hypocrisy was well-known.
