To what extent is the attribution to Imam Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) sound, regarding the saying that there are ten praiseworthy qualities in a dog that ought to be found in a believer?

The attribution of the aforementioned statement to Al-Hasan al-Basri could not be verified. It was mentioned by Al-Tilmisani in the biography of Abu Abdullah Al-Ra'i. Some of the mentioned qualities are indeed encouraged by Islamic law, such as patience, loyalty, contentment with little, avoiding worldly competition, and freedom from malice. However, some aspects are questionable, such as praising one who leaves no inheritance and considering them among the ascetics. Furthermore, even if a dog possesses good qualities, it is not permissible to raise or own one except for the cases explicitly permitted by the Lawgiver.
