Can a sum of money be paid as expiation for perjury that was admitted to before an investigator?
Bearing false witness is among the gravest of major sins, and its perpetrator must repent to Allah. If his testimony has not been acted upon, he must inform the investigator of the truth. However, if it has been acted upon, then in addition to repentance, he is obligated to guarantee the wealth that was lost by the accused due to his testimony. Repentance from bearing false witness must be made before the ruler, and he should not be deterred by shyness from people. He must retract his testimony in the judge's court. The ruling for this is discretionary punishment (ta'zeer) and guarantee of the lost wealth after the judgment has been issued, and only discretionary punishment before it. If the two witnesses retract their testimony before the judgment, it will not be ruled upon, and they are not liable for any guarantee.
