The aforementioned hadith is authentic and has been reported in Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim, among others. The reason for this hadith is that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was late for prayer, so Abu Bakr led the people in prayer. When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, arrived, the people clapped to alert Abu Bakr. The Prophet then gestured for Abu Bakr to remain in his place, but Abu Bakr stepped back, and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, stepped forward and led the people in prayer. The meaning of the hadith is that if something happens to a person during their prayer and they wish to alert someone else, a man should say "Subhan Allah" (Glory be to Allah), while a woman should clap, meaning she should strike one hand with the other (the palm of her right hand against the palm of her left hand), or she should slap (the back of her right hand against the palm of her left hand).
