How can one perform three hundred voluntary rak'ahs daily, and when can this be done?

Narrations vary concerning the prayers of some worshipers; some are truthful, some are false, some occur at specific times or in specific circumstances, and some are continuous. The narration of Ali ibn Abi Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, praying a thousand rak'ahs is false, as there isn't enough time for that. However, Imam Ahmad's prayer of three hundred rak'ahs is authentically narrated from him. The abundance of prayers by some worshipers is explained by their i'tikaf (seclusion in the mosque) or their detachment from worldly distractions.

The difference between frequent recitation of the Qur'an and frequent prayer lies in that prayer can be increased and maintained continuously, unlike Qur'an recitation, which should not be completed in less than three days, except for reviewing memorization. The reason some deny the abundance of prayer by worshipers often goes back to measuring it against themselves or a lack of blessing in their time.

A Muslim is advised to maintain the obligatory prayers, the regular supererogatory prayers (sunan ratibah), and as much of the voluntary prayers as possible, maintaining them consistently. For, "a little that is continuous is better than a lot that is cut off," with the permissibility of increasing if one finds vigor, without affecting consistency.
