How have languages and dialects evolved from the time of Adam (peace be upon him) until today, considering that he began with a single language?

The preponderant view is that Allah Almighty taught Adam (peace be upon him) the fundamentals of all languages, so he spoke them and taught them to his children. With their spread, their languages and dialects diverged. This is based on the premise that languages are tawqifiyyah (divinely revealed), citing His Almighty saying: "And He taught Adam all the names." While some have held that they are istilāḥiyyah (conventional), citing His Almighty saying: "And We did not send any messenger except with the language of his people."
