What is the evidence for the forfeiture of maintenance in the case of a wife's rebellion (nushuz), and is punishing the wife by starvation consistent with the methods of rectification mentioned in the Quran?

The majority of scholars are of the opinion that the maintenance of a disobedient (nashiz) wife who is not pregnant is forfeited, due to her violation of marital obedience. They justify this by stating that maintenance is obligatory in exchange for the wife making herself available to her husband. If she abstains, her right is forfeited, as in the Almighty's saying: "Men are in charge of women" [An-Nisa:34], and by analogy with the husband abandoning his wife in bed, where her right was forfeited due to her disobedience.
