Is the exemption from trimming the beard (not shortening it) contradictory to grooming it? What is the evidence that prohibits grooming the beard or grooming the hair directly in front of the ears? Is a wife's aversion to an unkempt beard considered an excuse for grooming and styling it?

It is permissible to trim the beard by taking what exceeds a fistful or what protrudes from it. Scholars have explicitly stated this, basing their rulings on the actions of a number of Companions and Tabi'un.

As for the part of the beard in front of the ears, it is permissible to trim it by taking what exceeds a fistful from it and removing what is unruly or scattered, whether the hair is long or short.

It is legislated for a man to adorn himself for his wife with what is permissible and appropriate for his masculinity, for a woman is pleased with her husband in the same way he is pleased with her, provided that it does not involve violating the Shari'ah.
