Is it permissible for a husband to trim his beard, and to what extent, given that it is very long?

Some jurists have gone so far as to permit taking what exceeds a fistful of the beard, as well as removing stray or unruly hairs. However, taking from it less than a fistful is disliked. Shaving the beard or excessively shortening it is not permissible according to the majority of scholars. A man adorning himself for his wife is desirable, but only in a manner that does not violate Islamic law.
