Should a mother divide her money among her children equally or according to inheritance law, and is it permissible to deprive a disobedient son of this money?
A mother must be fair among her children in giving gifts. Scholars have differed on how to be fair: should it be like inheritance, where the male gets the share of two females, or should the male get the same as the female? The most preferred opinion is that she should give the female the same amount she gives the male. As for her withholding a gift from her child, if he is disobedient (عاق), it is permissible to withhold from him, because disobedience is a transgression (فسق) that allows for deprivation from gifts. Nevertheless, it is advisable not to deprive the child of a gift to avoid increasing his disobedience and his resentment towards his siblings. Instead, she should gently advise him to honor his mother.
