What are minor sins, what are examples of them, what are their expiations, and are lying, smoking, and masturbation among them?

Sins are divided into minor and major. A major sin is any sin that Allah has concluded with a warning of Hellfire, or wrath, or a curse, or torment, or for which a specific punishment has been prescribed, such as the statement "he is not a believer." A minor sin is one for which there is no prescribed legal punishment (hadd) in this world and no specific threat of punishment in the Hereafter. Minor sins are expiated by avoiding major sins, by the five daily prayers, by Friday prayers, by Ramadan, and by acts of obedience mentioned in the hadiths, such as fasting on the Day of Arafah and Ashura. One should not take minor sins lightly, for persistence in them can transform them into major sins, and they may lead to the destruction of their perpetrator, as stated in the hadith, "Beware of the minor sins." Scholars have differed on whether lying is a minor or major sin, due to its mention as a characteristic of hypocrites and a cause for entering Hellfire.
