What is the religious ruling on a wife who treats her husband with contempt and disdain, especially during marital relations, and does not greet him with "peace" (Salam), despite fulfilling her household duties and raising the children? Is this considered divine punishment for the husband, or expiation for sins, and to what extent is it permissible for the husband to give his wife a general power of attorney that places the 'isma (right to initiate divorce) in her hands, while the husband commits to all her legitimate rights, after 34 years of patience?

Allah has legislated marriage for great purposes, the most important of which are family stability and for each spouse to know the other's rights. The wife must treat her husband well and acknowledge his status, and she must be mindful of the man's guardianship over her. The husband, for his part, should remember his wife's good qualities, act wisely, seek the help of prudent people to pray for her, and never despair, for what has happened may be a trial. The husband should not place the power of divorce in his wife's hands due to her emotional nature, though giving her her rightful Islamic rights is obligatory.
