To face affliction, a Muslim must be patient and submit to Allah's decree, knowing that what has befallen him was preordained. Affliction is good for the believer if he is patient and seeks reward from Allah. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, described all of a believer's affairs as good: if prosperity befalls him, he is grateful, and that is good for him; and if adversity befalls him, he is patient, and that is good for him.

Among the actions a Muslim takes to face affliction are: - Supplication (Du'a): It is one of the most beneficial remedies, warding off and treating affliction, preventing its descent and lifting it. It has three states in relation to affliction: it can be stronger and ward it off, or weaker and alleviate it, or they can be equally matched. - Adhering to Istighfar (seeking forgiveness): For it removes sins that may be a cause of afflictions, brings blessings, and wards off misfortunes. - Striving in righteous deeds: For uprightness and doing good necessitate mercy and ward off misfortunes. - Reliance upon Allah (Tawakkul): For whoever relies on Him, He suffices him, and whoever makes Him his reliance, He removes what worries and grieves him. - Adhering to the remembrance of Allah (Dhikr): Such as the supplications for distress and frequent prayers upon the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him.
