To what extent is reading romantic stories that speak of innocent, pure love and do not include vulgarity forbidden, and what is the alternative if they are forbidden?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

The Sharia has forbidden reading romantic stories because they incite passions, lead to evil, attach the heart to other than Allah, and cause forbidden infatuation and the labyrinths of vain imagination, leading the heart to desire and think about what Allah has forbidden. There is no such thing as "innocent love"; it is a form of infatuation that distances the heart from Allah and brings it closer to Satan. Scholars have considered it a form of minor shirk. A righteous woman should focus on what benefits her and brings her reward, such as performing obligatory duties, avoiding forbidden acts, reciting the Qur’an, maintaining remembrance of Allah, attending beneficial lessons, and reading Islamic magazines and the biographies of the righteous.
