Is it permissible to adopt the view of the jurists who hold that the sitting for rest (jalsat al-istiraahah) is not a Sunnah except when needed, such that this sitting is omitted and not performed unless there is a need for it, due due to the absence of dhikr (remembrance of Allah) in it and the desire that nothing in the prayer be devoid of dhikr?

There are three opinions regarding the sitting of rest (jalsat al-istirahah):

1. It is not sunnah at all. This is the madhhab of the Hanbalis. 2. It is sunnah absolutely as an act of worship. This is the opinion of most hadith scholars. 3. It is sunnah when there is a need for it (inability to rise without it). This is the choice of Ibn Qudamah and Ibn Al-Qayyim.

The preponderant opinion for us is that this sitting is sunnah due to the hadiths that mention it.
