Is it true that Friday prayer is sufficient for the forgiveness of sins, and that whoever performs Friday prayer and abandons the other obligatory prayers is not required to perform the other prayers, based on the hadith: "From one Friday to the next is an expiation for what is between them"? The expiation of sins between one Friday and the next is conditioned upon maintaining all five daily prayers and avoiding major sins, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The five daily prayers, and Friday prayer to Friday prayer, are expiations for what is between them, as long as major sins are avoided." Abandoning prayer is one of the greatest major sins. Ibn al-Qayyim reported the consensus of Muslims that whoever leaves even one prayer until its time expires is worse than an adulterer, a thief, or a wine-drinker. Anyone who trivializes prayer and holds it in contempt is trivializing Islam. Major sins are not expiated except by sincere repentance. The majority of scholars hold that intentionally missed prayers must be made up.
