Does the deceased know of their relatives' sorrow over them? And do they understand the reason for their sorrow?

There is no explicit legal text stating that the deceased knows about the sorrows of their family and the reason for their grief. However, it has been reported that the deceased greets those who join them and asks about the conditions of those who remain. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Indeed, the deceased is tormented by some of his family's weeping over him." This is interpreted to mean when the deceased had instructed that lamentation be made over him.
