The legitimate means by which a servant draws closer to his Lord to fulfill his needs, bring benefit, and ward off harm are those indicated by the Qur’an and , and they include:
1. Seeking intercession through the Oneness of Allah (): Such as the supplication of Prophet Yunus (peace be upon him), "There is no deity except You; exalted are You. Indeed, I have been of the wrongdoers," and the supplication of the man who asked Allah by His Greatest Name.
2. Seeking intercession through faith in Allah, His Messenger, and what He has revealed: As in His saying, the Almighty: "Our Lord, we have believed in what You sent down and we have followed the Messenger, so register us among the witnesses," and "Our Lord, indeed we have heard a caller calling to faith, [saying], 'Believe in your Lord,' and we have believed."
3. Seeking intercession through Allah's Most Beautiful Names and Attributes: As in His saying, the Almighty: "And to Allah belong the best names, so invoke Him by them."
4. Seeking intercession through the supplication of a righteous man: As 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) did when he prayed for rain through al-'Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him).
5. Seeking intercession through righteous deeds: An example of this is the story of the companions of the cave who supplicated to Allah through their righteous deeds (dutifulness to parents, chastity, trustworthiness), and Allah relieved them.
