How can one draw closer to God and His Messenger, and attain their pleasure through one's deeds?

The way to love Allah and draw closer to Him is by following the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace be upon him) in words and deeds, for Allah the Almighty says: "Say, [O Muhammad], 'If you should love Allah, then follow me; Allah will love you and forgive you your sins. And Allah is Forgiving and Merciful.'"

The most important and beloved deeds to Allah are to observe the obligatory duties and perform them correctly, for the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "My servant does not draw near to Me with anything more beloved to Me than what I have enjoined upon him."
