Imam Ahmad ibn Hanbal was born in Baghdad in the year 164 AH and was of Arab origin. He grew up as a poor orphan in Baghdad, where he received his initial education. He then turned to Hadith and became the first muhaddith (Hadith scholar) to collect Ahadith (plural of Hadith) from all regions. He accompanied Hashim ibn Bashir al-Wasiti for four years, then began his journeys in pursuit of Hadith in 186 AH, meeting Al-Shafi'i in Hijaz. He performed Hajj five times, three of them on foot, relishing the hardship in seeking knowledge and worship. He continued to seek knowledge even after becoming an Imam, famously saying, "With the inkpot until the grave." He was known for his complete contentment and detachment from worldly possessions, refusing gifts from anyone, even caliphs. Many of his contemporaries attested to his knowledge, piety, and devotion. He endured the ordeal of the "creation of the Quran" ( Miḥnat Khalq al-Qurʾān), remaining steadfast and patient until his passing in Baghdad in the year 241 AH.
