The answer

It is best for a woman to stay in her home, as Allah Almighty says: "And abide in your homes," and the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "The woman is 'awrah (i.e., private and to be covered). If she goes out, the devil tempts her. She is never closer to Allah than when she is in the depths of her home."

However, it is permissible for her to go out for a need or necessity, such as visiting relatives and friends, visiting the sick, and attending to religious and worldly matters, provided she adheres to Islamic guidelines such as wearing the legal hijab, lowering her gaze, and avoiding mixing with men.

If the intended destination is considered travel, then the presence of a mahram (unmarriageable kin) is required with her, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "It is not lawful for a woman who believes in Allah and the Last Day to travel a distance of one night unless she is accompanied by a mahram."

As for staying overnight with friends, it is permissible provided there is no fear of fitnah (temptation or discord) and a private place is available for her, while being careful not to mix with strange men or to be alone with them, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "No man should be alone with a woman unless there is a mahram with her."
