What is the explanation of the Hadith Qudsi that speaks of placing the sins of a group from the Ummah of Muhammad upon the Jews and Christians on the Day of Resurrection, taking into consideration Allah's saying: "That no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another"?

The Hadith, which states: "When the Day of Resurrection comes, Allah Almighty will hand to every Muslim a Jew or a Christian, and He will say: 'This is your ransom from the Hellfire,'" was narrated by Al-Tabarani and Al-Hakim, and its origin is in Sahih Muslim from Abu Musa Al-Ash'ari, may Allah be pleased with him. Various wordings of the Hadith have been reported, including: "No Muslim man dies but Allah will admit in his place in the Hellfire a Jew or a Christian."

As for the wording: "On the Day of Resurrection, people from among the Muslims will come with sins like mountains, and Allah will forgive them and place [these sins] upon the Jews and Christians," there is a difference from the other wordings. Scholars have dealt with it in two approaches:

First Approach: Non-acceptance and Weakening of the Hadith Due to the disagreement among narrators from Abu Burdah regarding its chain of narration, as it came with multiple versions, which led Imam Al-Bukhari and Al-Bayhaqi to state its defectiveness. Because of the narrator's doubt concerning the phrase "and place [these sins] upon the Jews and Christians," as mentioned by Al-Bayhaqi, Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar, and Al-Albani, due to its contradiction with the verse: "And no soul earns [anything] except against itself, and no bearer of burdens will bear the burden of another."

Second Approach: Interpreting the Meaning of the Hadith in Accordance with the Holy Quran Al-Bayhaqi clarified that Allah Almighty has prepared two places for every person, one in Paradise and one in Hellfire. So, the believer inherits the disbeliever's place in Paradise, and the disbeliever inherits the believer's place in Hellfire. Thus, the Muslim is ransomed from the Hellfire by the disbeliever. Al-Nawawi explained that the meaning of "This is your ransom from the Hellfire" is that Allah has predetermined a number to fill Hellfire. When disbelievers enter it due to their sins, they become a ransom for the Muslims. As for "and place [these sins] upon the Jews and Christians," its meaning is that Allah forgives the sins of the Muslims and removes them, and places similar [sins] upon the Jews and Christians due to their disbelief and sins. His statement "and place [these sins]" is metaphorical, and the intention is that they enter Hellfire due to their own actions, not due to the Muslims' sins. Ibn Kathir and Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar affirmed that believers inherit the places of disbelievers in Paradise because disbelievers did not obey their Lord, so believers deserved their share. The Permanent Committee for Islamic Research and Fatawa stated that if the Hadith is authentic, it must be understood to refer to Jews and Christians who were a cause for Muslims falling into sins, in accordance with the verse: "That they may bear their own burdens in full on the Day of Resurrection and some of the burdens of those whom they misguide without knowledge."
