How can one reconcile the verse in which Allah promises to punish the Children of Israel for the deeds of their forefathers with the verse that mentions that no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another?

The Almighty's saying: "And no bearer of burdens shall bear the burden of another" is a general principle indicating that no one is punished except for what they have earned. As for those from the Children of Israel who are punished, they are only punished if they follow their ancestors in deviation and misguidance, whereupon Allah sends against them those who punish them. But as for those who remain steadfast in obedience, Allah grants them honor and elevates them. Indeed, the deviant among them were punished by Nebuchadnezzar, and by the Muslims during the time of the Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, and by Hitler, and by Jesus, peace be upon him, and those with him, and others.
