What should one do who is unable to fast in Ramadan in order to continue his work, which he needs to support his family, knowing that the fasting hours are long and his work requires physical and mental effort?

We issued a previous fatwa regarding how people with arduous professions should fast. The summary of it is that they must form the intention to fast overnight and begin their fast. If they are able to complete the fast, it is obligatory. If, however, they experience unbearable hardship during the day, they may break their fast and must make up for the days they missed whenever it becomes easy for them to do so.
