What is the relationship between the happiness and misery mentioned in the noble Prophetic حديث and worldly happiness and misery? Can a person know their destiny? What is the effect of not submitting to what is mentioned in the حديث on religion and piety? How can one understand complaining about unhappiness and attributing happiness to personal effort in the context of divine decree?
The terms "happiness" (سعاده) and "misery" (شقاء) in Ibn Mas'ud's hadith refer to "Islam" and "disbelief" (kufr), and what a person's life concludes with in this world. A good ending signifies happiness and Paradise, while a bad ending signifies misery and Hellfire. This is affirmed by Quranic verses and Prophetic hadiths, where Allah Almighty says: (The Day it comes, no soul will speak except by His permission. And among them will be the wretched and the happy) [Hud: 105].
The true believer is one who thanks his Lord in prosperity and is patient in adversity, for everything Allah decrees for him is good. If he perseveres and shows gratitude, all his affairs become good. Belief in divine decree, both its good and bad, is a fundamental pillar. Contentment with Allah's decree and submission to His command bring blessings and motivate action without despair.
As for the signs of the people of Paradise and Hellfire in this world, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, clarified them: The people of Paradise are three: a just and successful ruler, a compassionate and tender-hearted man towards every relative and Muslim, and a chaste and abstinent man who has a family. As for the people of Hellfire, they are five: the weak one who has no intellect, the treacherous and greedy, the deceptive man, the miser, and the foul-mouthed. These characteristics are what define a person's ultimate fate in this world and the Hereafter.
