The question

Is the wife entitled to seek a divorce if the husband refuses procreation and uses contraception to ensure that, while she desires to conceive based on doctors' advice? What is the wife's right to sexual intercourse? Is it permissible for her or for a member of her family to speak to the girl the husband wishes to marry to persuade her to change her mind? Is the wife sinful if she persuades her husband to abandon the idea of a second wife due to her rejection and his difficult financial situation? Is the husband entitled to financially pressure his family to provide for the expenses of the second wife?

The answer

Procreation is a great objective of marriage and a shared right of both spouses. It is not permissible for a man to practice coitus interruptus with his free wife except with her consent. A man must have intercourse with his wife in a good manner, according to her need and his ability, and this is the sounder of the two opinions. Your husband has the right to marry a second wife as long as he is able to be just between you. Jealousy is a natural human emotion, and there is no blame in it as long as it does not lead to doing what is impermissible. It is not permissible for you to speak with the girl to convince her to back out of marrying him, but you can convince your husband to back out of the marriage. It is your right to demand that he spend on you and his daughter in a good manner, and it is not permissible for him to be stingy with the spending. We advise you to counsel your husband, and if he refuses and withholds your rights, then you have the right to seek a divorce. However, do not rush into it, and consult wise people to weigh the harm of divorce against the harm of staying, and choose the lesser of the two harms. Seek help from Allah and make abundant supplications.
