Does money earned through lawful means become unlawful if spent on unlawful things?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

Lawful money does not become unlawful merely because its owner spends it on unlawful things; rather, it remains lawful, and its owner will be held accountable for his spending. A person will be questioned about his money on the Day of Resurrection: "From where did he acquire it and on what did he spend it?" As stated in the Hadith: "The feet of a servant will not move on the Day of Resurrection until he is asked about his life and how he spent it, about his knowledge and what he did with it, about his money—from where he acquired it and on what he spent it—and about his body—how he wore it out."
