Is money earned from a company established with unlawful money still unlawful, or can I donate the same amount upon my repentance? And does the prevention of lawful sustenance justify earning unlawful money?

Whoever possesses ill-gotten wealth must dispose of it by giving it to the poor and needy. They should not take from it themselves unless they are poor and in need, in which case they may take what suffices their need. Some scholars are of the opinion that it is permissible for a craftsman to purchase equipment for his work with his ill-gotten money.

Al-Nawawi and Sheikh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah held the view that it is permissible for the possessor of ill-gotten wealth to give charity to themselves and their dependents if they are poor.

As for the profits resulting from investing ill-gotten money owned by a specific individual, Ibn Taymiyyah preferred that the profit be divided between them as if they were partners in a Mudarabah company. It is also not far-fetched to suggest that half of the profit goes to the poor and the other half to the investor.

One must seek lawful sustenance, which is readily available, and not hasten provision by seeking it through disobedience.
