What is the religious ruling on the conduct of a husband who expels his wife from her home under the pretext of 'nushuz' (disobedience), withholds her maintenance, claims she has waived her dowry, refuses to take her with him on travels, mocks her, deprives her of personal belongings, and strikes her without justification?

Disobedience (Nushuz) is the wife's transgression against her husband regarding an obligatory right, and not every disagreement between spouses is considered Nushuz. The Qur'anic remedy for Nushuz begins with admonition, then abandonment in the sleeping place, then non-brutal beating. Expelling the wife from the home without Nushuz is an injustice, and if Nushuz occurs, expulsion contradicts the Qur'anic method of treatment. Financial support (Nafaqah) is obligatory upon the husband, and it remains a debt upon him if he fails to provide it; the provision of basic needs is obligatory. The dowry (Mahr) is a right of the wife that is not forfeited unless she voluntarily waives it, and she has the right to demand it if she does not waive it. The husband is not obliged to take his wife with him on his short journey if she is safe. The husband's mockery of his wife and describing her as insane is forbidden. The husband has no right to prevent his wife from owning a phone with her own money. Beating the wife is forbidden unless it is for Nushuz, after admonition and abandonment, and with conditions: that it is not brutal, that the face and dangerous areas are avoided, and that it is believed it will lead to her rectification.
