What is the ruling on covering the hair and wearing a coat (mid-thigh length) with trousers as a hijab when among foreign men while traveling?

1 min readAlso available in العربية

This coat does not provide the required covering because it reveals the trousers from below the upper half of the thigh. The garment must extend to the feet. Ibn Uthaymeen mentioned that trousers—even if wide and loose—distinguish a man from a man, which indicates a lack of covering. The woman’s hijab must cover her entire body, including her face, and she must fear Allah in her attire, as Allah Almighty says: "But the raiment of righteousness—that is best" and His saying: "O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves [part] of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused."
