"If the number of camels I own reaches the nisab of five, and I do not own any sheep, then what do I give in place of the sheep? "

The original principle of Zakat (definition) is that it should be given from the specified type of wealth because it is an act of worship. Scholars differ on the permissibility of giving its value, and the prevailing opinion is that it is permissible due to need and benefit. Thus, giving the value is permissible in cases such as selling the produce of a garden for dirhams or when a sheep is required for Zakat of camels but cannot be purchased. It is preferable to give the actual item if possible; otherwise, it is permissible to give its value to the deserving poor and needy.
