How can a person act when their family in Tunisia forces them to attend mixed gatherings of men and women, and they do not wish that for themselves or their wife, especially given the difficulty of advising them and their acceptance of the matter?

Maintaining kinship ties is obligatory, and severing them is a form of corruption on earth. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, warned that one who severs kinship ties will not enter Paradise. The questioner must maintain kinship ties while avoiding forbidden mixing (اختلاط محرم), which is the gathering of men and women under one roof without adhering to Islamic guidelines. However, a mere gathering with adherence to guidelines is permissible. If adherence to the guidelines becomes impossible, then one can limit oneself to lesser degrees of maintaining ties to avoid falling into the forbidden. The degrees of maintaining kinship ties vary, and the lowest among them is to avoid abandoning relations and to maintain ties through speech.
