What is the ruling on naming a newborn "Bakil"?

The name "Bakil" is permissible in Islamic law because it carries acceptable meanings such as elegance and good choice. Some Arabs were named after it, such as "Nawf al-Bakali," the companion of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Naming a newborn is the right of the father, by scholarly consensus, and if the parents dispute, the name belongs to the father. Therefore, your husband has the right to name his son "Bakil." The aversion of the son and people to the name might fade once its meaning is understood. Nevertheless, you can consult with your husband to try and persuade him to change the name to other good names such as Muhammad or Abdullah.
