Did Al-Hasan al-Basri, Ata, Al-Tabari, and Qadi Iyad issue fatwas permitting taking from the beard beyond a fistful, as long as it is not excessive?

The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, differed from the polytheists and commanded the growing of beards and the trimming of mustaches. Scholars have differing opinions regarding the trimming of the beard. Some disliked trimming it at all. Others permitted it if it exceeded a handful, citing the action of Ibn 'Umar. Some allowed trimming from its length and width if it became excessive, as mentioned regarding Al-Hasan Al-Basri and 'Ata', and this was chosen by Al-Tabari. While 'Iyad disliked shaving the beard and trimming it, he permitted trimming it if it became large, which Al-Nawawi opposed, preferring to leave it as it is.
