What is the ruling on a traveling man breaking his fast, when he intended to stay in a city for less than four days, has a wife there, and rented a house there, and he broke his fast by availing himself of the concession for travelers? And what is required of him?

As long as the traveler does not intend to reside for four days in his wife's city, he is permitted to avail himself of the concessions of travel, such as breaking the fast and shortening prayers, even if his wife is a resident there. The Shafi'is have agreed on the permissibility of shortening prayers in the wife's city if the traveler does not intend to reside there. And if a layperson performs an act in accordance with a valid opinion of recognized scholars, there is no blame upon him nor any need for repetition, even if the act itself is considered less preferable.
