Is a father, who possesses ample wealth, entitled to refrain from assisting his needy children and instead spend all his money on inviting to Allah, citing the noble verse: "O you who have believed, indeed, among your wives and your children are enemies to you, so beware of them"?

The majority of scholars hold that the financial support (nafaqa) of an adult son is not obligatory upon the father unless the son is incapacitated, whereas the Hanbalis consider it obligatory even if the son is healthy, and they oblige the father to marry off a poor son.

Based on the Hanbali school of thought, the father is not permitted to refrain from spending on his needy children. As for the father's citing of Allah's saying: ﴿O YOU WHO HAVE BELIEVED, INDEED, AMONG YOUR WIVES AND YOUR CHILDREN ARE ENEMIES TO YOU, SO BEWARE OF THEM﴾, this is misplaced. The verse is a warning against obeying wives and children in disobedience to Allah. Spending on them is not an act of disobedience; rather, it is a great act of obedience and one of the best forms of expenditure.
