Is the money that a divorced wife took from her first husband, according to the law of the foreign country, considered illicit wealth that must be returned, or is it her right Islamically? And if she must return it, what should she do when the money has been spent? And are the problems she is currently experiencing due to the sin of her first husband, and how can she repent and please Allah?

What some man-made laws impose, such as joint ownership of property between spouses or granting the wife ownership upon divorce beyond her legitimate Islamic rights, is impermissible. She must return what she took in excess of her legitimate Islamic right, or seek the husband's forgiveness. If she is unable to do so immediately, it becomes a debt upon her.

As for whether what she receives is a punishment for her husband's injustice or similar, that knowledge is with Allah. Sins are a cause of affliction, as Ibn al-Qayyim said: "Among the punishments for sins is that they remove blessings and bring about misfortunes."

However, repentance erases what came before it, and one who repents from a sin is like one who has no sin. Ibn Taymiyyah said: "And the truth of our statement is: that the repentant one is not punished, neither in this world nor in the Hereafter, neither by divine law nor by divine decree."
