What is the meaning of the Hadith mentioned in Sunan Abu Dawud which prohibits women from walking in the middle of the road, and how can she cross to the opposite side if she wishes to do so?

Islamic Sharia calls for high morals and ethics, and it is concerned with preserving women's chastity, modesty, and haya (shyness). It calls upon women to maintain proper etiquette, hence it forbade them from intentionally walking in the middle of the road due to the display of adornment (tabarruj) and mixing with men that it entails. It should be known that women are not to walk in the middle of the road; rather, they should keep to the sides of the road. This prohibition against women walking in the middle of the road was narrated from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who said to the women: "Step back, for you are not to occupy the middle of the road; you must keep to the sides of the road." Ibn Hibban was of the view that this expression is a statement whose intention is to deter women from coming into physical contact with men while walking. This indicates that the mixing of men and women is a cause of fitna (temptation/strife). A woman should avoid mixing with men as much as possible and always remain in a state of modesty and protection. However, if she has a need that requires her to be in the middle of the road or to cross its sides, there is no blame upon her for that.
