There is no objection to a girl marrying someone who is less wealthy or of lower social standing than her, or someone with fewer worldly possessions. The criterion for superiority in the sight of Allah is piety and righteous deeds, for "Indeed, the most noble of you in the sight of Allah is the most righteous of you." Competence in marriage is solely based on religion and character, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If someone whose character and religious commitment you are pleased with comes to you, then marry him." The girl should adhere to the suitor who possesses good character and religious commitment, and she should advise her relatives that boasting about wealth and status is characteristic of the ignorant, for Allah Almighty said: "And it is not your wealth or your children that bring you closer to Us in nearness, but only he who believes and does righteousness." Furthermore, if relatives slander the man, it constitutes forbidden backbiting.
