If a man divorces his wife with three pronouncements of divorce, it is an irrevocable major divorce (baynunah kubra), and she is not lawful for him until she marries another husband. However, if he divorces her with the first or second pronouncement, and her ' (waiting period) expires, it is an irrevocable minor divorce (baynunah sughra). The same applies if he divorces her in exchange for compensation. In this case, he is permitted to marry her again with a new contract.
