The question

How can prayers that were not performed on time be made up? Are they made up with the intention of making up for them or as a voluntary act? And what is the method for making up missed prayers? Are they made up all at once for several days, or is each missed prayer made up with its equivalent current prayer?

The answer

The majority of scholars and the madhhabs of the four imams hold that making up all missed prayers is obligatory, whether they were missed intentionally or due to forgetfulness. Therefore, the questioner must repent to Allah and make up the prayers she missed. If she knows their number, she should make them up. Otherwise, she should make up the number she most likely believes is required. She should start with the first prayer she missed, then the one after it. If she does not know the order, she should start with Dhuhr, then Asr, and so on.

Some jurists hold that the order of making up missed prayers is not obligatory but rather recommended, especially if they are numerous.

As for the view that making up prayers intentionally abandoned is not legislated, what is obligatory is repentance and increasing voluntary prayers, not as a substitute for making up prayers, but to compensate for deficiencies.

Sheikh Muhammad bin Salih Al-Uthaymeen mentioned that whoever delays prayer due to an excuse (such as sleep or forgetfulness) should pray it when the excuse ceases. However, whoever intentionally abandons it without an excuse, their prayer is not valid even if they pray it thousands of times, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Whoever performs an action which is not in accordance with our matter, it will be rejected."
