How do we reconcile the fact that Jibreel reviewed the entire Quran with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, in the last Ramadan of his life, with the fact that the verse "And fear a Day when you will be returned to Allah" was revealed a few days before the Prophet's death in Rabi' al-Awwal?

The "al-Ardah" (recitation/review) refers to Gabriel's review of the Quran with the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, every year in Ramadan. Aisha mentioned this in a hadith narrated by Fatimah. Companions such as Abdullah ibn Mas'ud and Zayd ibn Thabit witnessed this al-Ardah.

The "mu'aradah" meant the comparison of what had been revealed. Therefore, Gabriel reviewed the Quran with the Prophet twice in the last year of his life, and thus the Prophet understood the nearness of his demise. Uthman compiled the Imam Mus'haf based on the last al-Ardah.

The al-Ardah each year was not for the entire Quran, but for what had been revealed up to that time. This does not preclude the revelation of verses after the al-Ardah.
