Does hearing the Qur’an affect a person in the same way as reading it?
Allah Almighty commanded listening to the Quran and promised mercy for doing so. Reciting the Quran is better than listening to it, because recitation combines the utterance of the tongue and the hearing of the ear, while listening occurs by hearing a present person or from a broadcast or a recorded tape. All of this contains great reward and good. The listener should ponder, humble himself, and act upon what is in it. Listening to the Quran does not substitute for reading it. Undoubtedly, the listener has a reward and shares in the reciter's reward. Sometimes, a person might prefer listening if it leads to greater presence and contemplation. However, a person reciting by himself earns more reward because it involves action and listening. In (Islamic exorcism/healing), there is no harm in listening to it. The original practice is for it to be direct, as the Prophet (peace be upon him) and the Companions did, and spitting (nafth) is required. Listening to a tape does not substitute for the direct intervention of the reciter with the afflicted person.
